The IMEI or MEID number for your mobile phone acts as a unique identifier for that device. No two devices will have the same IMEI or MEID. This makes it a very useful tool for blocking lost or stolen mobile phones on telecom network. I read many articles related to this on internet - all confidently affirm that Lost Mobile Phones can be easily blocked on telecom network as soon as you provide IMEI or MEID to your telecom network provider. But the reality is quite different.
I agree, it is possible to block the lost mobile phone on telecom network technically or theoretically. Do the telecom networks actually have the ability to make this service available for their users? Can they practically block lost mobile phones on their telecom network if requested by any user to do so? The answer is "No". Telecom networks don't have this feature available with them. You cannot get your lost mobile phone blocked on telecom network with the IMEI or MEID.
I tried this with my telecom network provider. I lost my mobile phone - I followed procedures like reporting the incident to police and then requesting the telecom network provider to block the lost mobile phone with the provided IMEI Number. I received a reply from them, "Further, we regret to inform you that, we are unable to block IMEI (handset) from our end as there is no provision for the same." Here, I bring a copy of communication I had with them.
